What Is UGC (User-Generated Content)?
User-generated content, commonly abbreviated as UGC, is any content (photos, videos, reviews, social media posts) created by people who are not officially employed or contracted by a brand, typically customers, fans, or creators, that features or references that brand or its products.
UGC is valued in marketing because it is perceived as more authentic and trustworthy than brand-produced content. It represents real people with real opinions sharing genuine reactions.
Types of UGC in Marketing
Organic UGC. Content created spontaneously by customers who love a product and choose to share it without any brand prompting. This is the most credible form of UGC and the hardest to generate at scale.
Gifting-generated UGC. Content created by creators who received a product for free and chose to share it. Structurally similar to organic UGC in that there is no content obligation and the creator's motivation is genuine enthusiasm.
Commissioned UGC. Content created by UGC creators who are paid specifically to produce content in an organic-looking style for brand use. This is commercially produced content that mimics UGC aesthetics rather than genuine UGC.
UGC vs Influencer Content
The distinction has blurred significantly as the creator economy has matured. Gifting-generated creator content occupies a middle ground: it's produced by creators with an audience rather than anonymous customers, but it's not contracted or obligated in the way that paid influencer content is.
Why UGC Matters for European Brands
European consumer audiences, particularly in Northern European markets, place high value on authentic peer recommendation. UGC and gifting-generated organic creator content perform significantly better in these markets than polished brand advertising, both in terms of engagement and purchase intent.
For D2C brands building awareness in European markets, generating a consistent stream of authentic UGC through product seeding programmes is one of the most cost-efficient marketing strategies available.
